My new book has been profiled in the MSR Winter Issue of 2012 - see page 11

1 March 2012
My latest book is being introduced to stakeholders with the following 'press release':

“For too long the social contract with business remained vague, unwritten and suspect of undermining the profit motive of the firm . . .” (Page xi)

This book is about the Social Contract with Business as a means to deliver humanity’s global sustainability mandate.

From a well researched Socratic dialogue with today’s leaders and thinkers in the West, East, and South emerged action-oriented answers to the questions: What kind of future does humanity want?; What society for such a future?; What business for such a society?; What business leader for such a business?; What education for such a business leader?

In a conversational style the reader is taken on a journey away from today’s world of destructive globalisation. Slowly, meticulously, and excitingly the reader is introduced to a new global agenda, a new mode of doing business as an organ of society; new wisdom, new success criteria, a new language, a new canon of business knowledge, and a new paradigm for business leadership education.

This conversation has been enriched with more than 100 practical examples, more than 100 reflection points, and an exposé of fallacies and blind spots.

The book concludes with guidelines on how to apply the Social Contract with Business in your organisation . . . in any country, and in any sector of human endeavour.

This book is written for all who dare to care.

This book is timely, authentic and a first of its kind - it concludes eight years of research, reflecting and writing.

Kindly forward this book announcement to your own network.
Thank you!

The Social Contract MBA

This posting is about a continuous update of my work on the postmodern MBA.

So, what new valued added?

March 2013
The Social Contract MBA has now been developed to the point where detailed curriculum design can commence. See http://www.mba.co.za/article.aspx?s=51&a=4331

January 2013

The Social Contract - implications for the MBA

This essay was published in the EFMD's Global Focus - see pages 56 - 57

What educational paradigm?: conscientisation
Rationale: This educational paradigm aims at sculpting MBA graduates to deliver a specific kind of future, that is, a WOIG future. The educational challenge is to develop a practical conscience-based critical awareness of the values and ideals of a WOIG. It is this conscience that drives obligation and responsibility - the business leader's core strength to deliver acts of wisdom, love and courage.
(An extract from my new book – published March 2012)

1 February 2012

Vision (what kind of postmodern MBA graduates do you wish to produce?)
Business leaders who can apply the Social Contract with Business.
Rationale: To sculpt leaders who can lead the turn-around from a world of destructive globalisation to a world of inclusive globalisation - on the global stage, and in any country and in a any sector of human endeavour.
(An extract from my new book -published in March 2012)

25 May 2011

“This book [my research monograph on the postmodern MBA] should be of keen interest to those charged with the task of redesigning MBA education as well as those of us who teach MBAs.” (An Academy of Management Learning and Education book review; March 2011).
1 May 2011
The postmodern MBA is a radical departure from today's MBA. From a critical metasynthesis of +1000 wisdoms from today's leaders and thinkers from around the world, a new educational philosophy, termed 'conscientization', emerged, which is aimed at developing global game changers - professional business leaders, capable of delivering humanity's global sustainability mandate.

The European Foundation for Management Development published my research-based essay, titled: The Postmodern MBA - curriculum design principles. This essay was also published in Chinese.

Humanity's global sustainability mandate

This posting is about a continuous update of my work on humanity’s global sustainability mandate.

My full profile is available on http://www.jopiecoetzee.co.za/
I am based in Johannesburg - email address: jopie@global.co.za

So, what new evidence?
1 October 2011
What do you mean with 'human security'?
Human security” implies all forms of security that a person needs to live a full and meaningful life that’s free of ‘threats without borders’, dysfunctional societal and political behaviour, the devastation of irresponsible business models and policies. In other words it’s human security in its broadest sense.
1 September 2011
What do you mean with 'poverty'?

Poverty’ implies all people who have an income of less that US$2/day. Indications are that some 70% of humanity (4, 5 billion people) falls into this category.
1 August 2011
What is a WODG?
A world of destructive globalisation’ (WODG) is that world scenario that is the exact opposite of a world of inclusive globalisation, i.e. poverty and poor human security are irrelevant consequences of business models and policies.1 July 2011
What is a WOIG?
A world of inclusive globalisation’ (WOIG) is that world scenario driven by two powerful global forces, namely the need to improve human security and the need to eradicate systemic poverty through sustained business models and policies.
 28 February 2011
The people's uprising in the Arab states of northern Africa is typical of a kind of society that wants to build a future where their poverty has been removed and their broad security is assured. Will business enterprises emerge, which can act as organs of this new society?

Dedication of this posting:
Prahalad, C.K. 2005. The fortune at the bottom of the pyramid: eradicating poverty through profits. Upper Saddle River: Wharton School Publishing.

What is humanity’s global sustainability mandate?
The premise is that business is an organ of society.
For this premise to happen in practice a purpose-driven awareness of, and a sensitivity towards, societal aspirations is required – conscientização (a critical conscience-driven sculpting of a specific kind of future). This calls for business to become co-responsible (together with civil and political organs) to deliver on humanity’s global sustainability mandate to its leaders, termed the End-purpose Statement of Visions, namely:
What kind of future does humanity want?
A world of inclusive globalisation, where systemic poverty has been permanently removed and where humanity’s broad security is assured.
What kind of society can deliver and sustain such a future?
A kind of society that finds its greatness in protecting both its humanity and its economy as a whole.
What kind of business would such a society require?
World-class enterprises – financially robust across economic cycles, with global stewardship as the dominant business logic.
What kind of leaders would such a business require?
Global leaders with an ability to envision the WOIG and then to lead to it in an entrepreneurial and path-breaking manner exerting leadership qualities associated with the Golden Rule of Humanity.

Fundamental values underpinning my work

This posting is about a continuous update of my work on the fundamental values underpinning my writing and research.

So what new guidance?
1 December 2011
As a hobby, I endeavour to plant one tree for each final page written. Over the past three years 740 Portulacaria afra (spekboom) trees have been cultivated in my little nursery in the back-yard. These trees are said to have the highest conversion rate of carbon to oxygen in nature - thus also being called 'miracle trees'! The trees are donated to local churches and charities to raise funds or to beautify their grounds.
1 February 2011
What has been your credo for doing business over the past three decades?
"My fundamental principle of doing business is "The best way to to benefit oneself is to benefit others first.""

Dedication of this posting:
Berry, A.J. 1997. ‘Approaching the millennium: transforming leadership education for stewardship of the planet’s resources’, Leadership and Organisation Development Journal, 45(5): 86–92.

What are these fundamental values?

Stewardship – as a guardian of all life on Earth through responsible business models and policies.

Leadership acts of wisdom, love and courage.

The Golden Rule of Humanity:
“What I mean by this [the moral minimum guiding human behaviour] can be demonstrated relatively simply by means of the Golden Rule of Humanity which we find in all the great religious and ethical traditions. Here are some of its formulations:
Confucius (c.551-489 BCE): “What you yourself do not want, do not do to another person” (Analects 15.23).
Rabbi Hillel (60 BCE – 10 CE): “Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you” (Shabbat 31a).
Jesus of Nazareth: “Whatever you want people to do to you, do also to them” [...for this sums up the Law and the Prophets] (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31).
Islam: “None of you is a believer as long as he does not wish his brother what he wishes himself” (Forty Hadith of an-Nawawi, 13).
Buddhism: “A state which is not pleasant or enjoyable for me will also not be so for him; and how can I impose on another a state which is not pleasant or enjoyable for me?” (Samyutta Nikaya V, 353, 35-342,2).
Hinduism: “One should not behave towards others in a way which is unpleasant for oneself: That is the essence of morality” (Mahabharata XIII, 114, 8).”
(Küng H. 1998: A global ethic for global politics and economics. Oxford: Oxford University Press, p. X11)

A Christian way of life.
